Welcome to the Prefix Verb Dictionary
A dictionary designed specifically to help you explore and learn German prefix verbs.
German prefix verbs can feel overwhelming, scattered, and hard to pin down. This dictionary is built to make them easier to understand by showing the structure behind them, the core ideas of the prefixes, and the connections between related verbs.

Why this dictionary is different
This dictionary is built to help you actually understand prefix verbs, not just look them up.
- Jump between related versions of the same base verb or prefix with one click.
- Explore the core meanings of prefixes and build intuition for them.
- Translations are grouped by distinct ideas, so you don't have to fight your way through a wall of 30 loose translations.
- See how common an idea is and what is worth noting about its meaning or usage.
- See the opposite of an idea whenever there is one.
- Build intuition for "the versions" like raufmachen, heraufmachen, runtermachen, and more through a systematic approach.
- Find handmade example sentences for most entries, with the option to generate more with AI.
- Ask questions about usage directly in the entry.
- All entries are handmade by me, Emanuel from YourDailyGerman. I'm trying to organize it so it actually makes sense.

The Prefix Verb Card Game
I also made a real-life card game for learning German prefix verbs, and after a successful Kickstarter it is already being enjoyed by hundreds of happy players worldwide.
The game includes 72 cards with base verbs and meanings, and there are many ways to play: alone, one on one, in a group, or in class.
If you want a hands-on way to practice prefix verbs, the card game is a fun and flexible companion to the dictionary.
